Architect and designer Il Hoon Roh presents a coffee table that from the looks of it would make the cup fall through. But that is just an optical illusion. To generate this form, a single piece of fabric was stretched by hand into a three-dimensional form, which was then hardened by laminating with GRP. The resulting shapes were not pre-set but allowed to generate into the final shapes, replicating building processes found in nature.
Il Hoon Roh says this design is about appreciating nature’s simple, yet advanced design process. Architectural sculptures exhibiting at The Aram Gallery this year are part of the designer’s long-term investigation into geometry in nature.
