The rather unusual request of a house awaiting death came in to the japanese architect- and design firm Eastern design office one day. The client estimated he had 15 years left to live, and he wanted to spend them alone in a house facing the sea. A location was picked on the rather remote peninsula Ise. This was a place where the all off the clients wishes could be fulfilled. He wanted to hear the crashing of the waves, and he wanted to see the sunrise, but never the sunset. His awaiting death, the client said, wouldn't be a sunset, but a sunrise.
Eastern design office took his words very seriously and created a house capturing the sea, the waves and the sunrise. The house has been planned carefully. The height of the floor is nearly 8.6 meters from the horizon, a perfect height to view the waves from a sitting position. The waves has been made apart of the interior of the house. Wave-like shapes runs through the walls. The idea has been to highlight the unlimitedness of the wave; and the idea as the sea as an appearance of waves. The floor heights varies through the house, making each spot perfect for wave watching. You can watch the waves while cooking, eating, resting, since the floor heights has been adapted to the posture you will hold when performing each and every activity. The waves will always be at eye level.
The exterior has been decorated with an anchor, symbolizing the way the house to await death in anchors the client to his life. In the same mannor, the huge windows dominating the fasted has been designed to let the sunrise in, but keep the sunset out. The house awaiting death became a house where a new beginning can be seen every day.
