40 years ago Elio Martinelli, with a deep design culture and a great receptivity for the spirit of his time, drew the lamp Cobra. It immediately became a symbol of a modern and functional design expressed through a formal harmony and a chromatic balance. This year the lamp has its 40 year anniversary which is celebrated by the launch of a limited edition.
Elio Martinelli, who now manages Martinelli Luce, gave us a short evocative image of the creative moment that links the figure of his father to Cobra:
- “As you may guess by simply looking at it, Cobra is set into a sphere and the lamp is formed by rotating its head by 180°. The snake's rolling up or its unrolling to raise its head, is a dynamic movement that the lamp, which my father drew, well reproduces, however the expressive potential produced by the image of the Cobra that springs and rises following the music stimulus of the snake-charmer is clear in this lamp. it was difficult to produce this effect through a strict and neat geometry of shapes such as the ones my father preferred: the result is clear and now, 40 years later, I deem it as even more present.
Originally this lamp was produced in black and white polyurethane resin and, following the trends of those years, in yellow and red resin. Now Martinelli Luce offers Cobra in a limited edition made in black shiny resin and signed.
