Crafted desk

On the occasion of the Quartier des Bains common opening night in Geneva, on Thursday May 20th 2010, Mitterrand+Cramer/Design inagurated a solo exibition with a new collection by Maarten Baas.

This new series, Grey Derivations, is co-produced by the gallery and the designer and sets up a new milestone for both of them. For Maarten Baas first, since the creations by this young contemporary design star are all the more awaited that his recognition has recently enhanced by a mid-career retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum 's-Hertogenbosch (running until May 24th, 2010) and his election as the Designer of the Year 2009 at Design Miami. And then for Mitterrand+Cramer/Design, which after exhibiting Tom Dixon, Studio Makkink & Bey and Studio Job add another big name which grants the gallery with his trust by accepting to participate to this recent program.

This exhibition was an opportunity for Maarten Baas and the gallery to question the edition process in relation to the production process. This lead to the conclusion that this specific series should stay very unique considering the hundred of crafting hours which were spent on each piece, making the idea of an edition a nonsense.

Therefore, apart from the Grey Derivations Desk Light which was partially produced using a mould, all other five works from the series are handmade, unique pieces.
