Young designer Abie Abdillah was surprised when he saw an old picture of his home town. Born in 1986, he had never experienced the classic and fresh with blue skies Jakarta, known from 1970s postcards. The crowded and hectic city he grew up in had no resemblance to this calm and green place, and a longing for times past made him create the lounge chair Doeloe. The name, pronounced "dull", refers to a time that has passed. The chair is inspired by a design of “Oplet”, a type of public transportation vehicles used in Jakarta from the 1930s to 1979. The classic material rattan is used to represent the feelings of wanting to live in a time that has passed.
The intention of the designer has also been to create a piece of furniture that shows the greatness of the rattan material, and its characteristics.
